RedBox
This retired Redbox DVD rental kiosk has found a new home at our makerspace and has been affectionately nicknamed "Mousebox"—a nod to the surprise mouse once discovered living in its power bay.
Originally built for automated media dispensing, the kiosk is now a conversation piece and a project-in-progress.
With its built-in screen and robotic disc handling system, it’s a treasure trove for anyone interested in reverse engineering, embedded systems, or automation design.
We've added a custom top box for random supply storage and cut a viewing window into the side so visitors can watch the machine do its magic.
Thanks to help from the Redbox modding community, we’ve also modified the UI to streamline the checkout experience—removing steps like the ZIP code screen to make things faster and friendlier.
Additional items have been loaded into the system, including DVDs that were never part of the original Redbox library, and one special case filled with custom stickers made just for Mousebox.
Future plans include further software modifications and converting the machine into a parts and consumables dispenser for the makerspace.
For now, it stands as a fun and nostalgic reminder of when Friday night meant picking out a DVD from a glowing box outside the grocery store.
