HackRVA has a SawStop Table Saw (model CNS175) in the wood shop.

We chose the this saw because of its added safety features. Its also a wonderful tool to use. We have had some classes on its use, and there are many users who can go over it with you. Don't try to use it without training, and we recommend you read manual for the SawStop

Users are responsible for the cost of setting off the safety measures - which is around $100 depending on what blade is on it. Just a reminder, and not a substitute for training: Anything conductive will trigger the brake, including green wood, wet wood, foil covered material, etc. To test your material, turn on the main power switch and let the saw initialize (the light stops blinking). Then once the power light is steady, but the blade is not spinning, you can touch the blade and see the sensor light above the power switch light. If it lights, it will set off the brake when the blade is moving. Try it with you material.

If you have a material that is not safe to use with the protection system, it is possible to disable the system.

Here is the manual for the SawStop. Also the Quick Start Guide if you are already familiar with table saw use.
